Ilya Kofman (College of Staten Island and CUNY Graduate Center) - Geometry of Lorenz knots - December 12, 2011

The Lorenz differential equations are the prototypical chaotic dynamical system with a "strange attractor". Lorenz knots are periodic orbits in the Lorenz flow on R^3. In joint work with Joan Birman, we identified over half of the simplest hyperbolic knots as Lorenz knots. In this talk, I will provide some background, and discuss recent results about the geometry of Lorenz knots, which is joint work with Abhijit Champanerkar, Dave Futer, Walter Neumann and Jessica Purcell.
