We will illustrate the theorem in [N. Ressayre, The GIT-equivalence for G-line bundles, Geom. Dedicata 81, 295--324, 2000] describing the so-called GIT-fan, by looking at the case of N points in P^1. Then we'll sketch the proof of the theorem.
